Build Canada Homes early investments and initiatives
Build Canada Homes was launched in September 2025 with an initial $13 billion capitalization to accelerate housing development across the country. The agency's first wave of investments includes:
Direct Build initiative
Build Canada Homes will fast-track development on six Canada Lands Company sites using a Direct-Build model prioritizing innovative, modern methods of construction, starting with up to 4,000 homes.
Six initial sites have been selected in Dartmouth, Longueuil, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Edmonton, with construction expected to begin in Summer/Fall 2026.
On October 17, 2025, a Request for Qualifications was launched to engage builders for the development of new housing on the Arbo Downsview parcel. More information about the additional Build Canada Homes parcels still to come.
Protecting existing affordable rentals
The $1.5 billion Canada Rental Protection Fund will be launched under Build Canada Homes to help preserve at-risk affordable rental housing.
Supportive and transitional housing
One billion will be invested in the construction of transitional and supportive housing for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Partnering in Nunavut
Over 700 units will be built in Nunavut in partnership with the Nunavut Housing Corporation, with approximately 30% of the units built off-site using innovative construction methods such as factory-built housing.
Next steps
These initial investments represent only the beginning of Build Canada Homes' plan to deploy its full $13 billion investment in expanding affordable and deeply affordable housing across the country.
