Building a resilient, low-carbon and sustainable future

People in Canadian communities need spaces to connect and engage. These spaces must be constructed in a way that not only supports Canada's transition to net zero emissions but also ensures resilience against extreme weather events. Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada's investments in low-carbon community buildings and recreational facilities are helping to build strong, sustainable and resilient communities.

We're helping communities reduce their carbon footprint

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada's investments contribute to national efforts to meet Canada's greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in the buildings sector, including achieving net-zero by 2050. As municipalities oversee the construction and upkeep of 99% of publicly-owned cultural, recreational, and sports facilities, Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is committed to collaborating with all levels of government and community partners in making investments to reduce the carbon footprint of community buildings. This includes: ensuring that new community spaces supported by Housing Infrastructure and Communities Canada are constructed to net-zero standards; supporting retrofits to reduce emissions, improve energy-efficiency and reduce costs; and supporting net-zero transition planning.

We're making community buildings more resilient

As extreme weather events, natural hazards, and climate impacts become more frequent and intense across the country, enhancing the resilience of our cultural, recreational and sports facilities is key. Our investments are helping to ensure that the arena or library you frequent can better withstand climate change impacts like flooding, wildfires, intense heat, unpredictable weather, and long-term erosion.
