Community stream in Alberta

On this page

The Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) Community stream provides up-front, predictable long-term funding to help address local infrastructure priorities. The agreements were renewed for a 10-year period, starting in 2024-25. Over the first five years, the Community stream will invest over $1.3 billion in the province of Alberta to support community growth.

Information for previous years is available at Canada's open portal: Build Communities Strong Fund Community stream Municipal Allocations.

Housing priorities

The Community stream will enable increased housing supply through the following shared housing action priorities, agreed to by Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada and the Government of Alberta for 2024-25 to 2026-27:

  • Continue to work with any communities with more than 30,000 residents who have yet to complete and make public a Housing Needs Assessment based on the federal template provided;
  • Support a scale-up of non-market, affordable and attainable housing; and,
  • Support innovation in construction techniques by committing to working with federal and municipal partners on advancing the use of modular and prefabricated housing, including working with the federal government to develop and adopt a design catalogue where appropriate.

Canada-Alberta Administrative Agreement

The renewal of this agreement ensures that essential infrastructure that supports housing will continue to be built, maintained, and expanded in Alberta.
