Build affordable homes

Build Canada Homes will lead the planning, development, and construction of affordable housing across the country—working with industry to deliver affordable housing options that serve diverse needs and remain affordable over the long-term.

We will develop public lands under the portfolio of Canada Lands Company, which will soon be transferred under Build Canada Homes. Leveraging these public lands, Build Canada Homes will prioritize factory-built housing and innovative construction methods. By building at scale and at a lower cost,, we will deliver more homes, faster.

We will prioritize sustainable construction—using certified Canadian wood and recycled and low-emission materials—to reduce emissions, ensure climate resilience, and support our domestic supply chains. Wherever possible, we will prioritize the deployment of low-carbon, climate resilient and or/net-zero approaches and technologies, including incorporating low-carbon materials and efficient design to reduce the carbon footprint of projects and ensure long-term resiliency.

There is a lot of opportunity to buy Canadian and build sustainably. For example, prefabricated mass timber projects and low-carbon pre-cast concrete can contribute to reducing construction timelines and costs. Prioritising lower-carbon ready-mixed concrete has a significant emission reduction potential, and lower-carbon intensive concrete mixes are readily available across Canada's urban centres at cost neutral or low-cost premiums. In addition, Canadian steel is amongst the cleanest against global competitors, among the lowest average emissions intensity globally.
