Protecting our natural water resources

Canada is known for its stunning natural beauty and pristine wilderness. When Canadian communities use water resources, they expect the infrastructure will help to keep the environment clean. This is achieved by preventing pollution to lakes and rivers, preventing water loss, and conserving energy.

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is an important partner, working with provinces, territories, and local governments to invest in wastewater treatment and stormwater infrastructure that protects Canada's environment and resources.

Wastewater and stormwater infrastructure is critical for the protection of Canada's freshwater resources

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada funding has supported the construction and rehabilitation of wastewater pipes and stormwater infrastructure, improving the quality of treated wastewater and stormwater released across Canada.

We're supporting more efficient water pipes, preventing wasteful leakage of drinking water

As pipes age and deteriorate over time, they become more prone to bursts and need timely repairs. In 2021, 17% of potable water produced was lost from the distribution system. Investments towards replacing old pipes support the efficient use of Canada's water resources, reduce leakages, and ensure that potable water makes it to the taps of Canadians.
