Public transit for Canadian communities

When people choose public transit, they expect convenient, dependable, and efficient travel. Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is an important partner working alongside municipalities, provinces, territories, and Indigenous communities, to create new and expanded public transit services in urban and rural Canada.

We're making it easier for people in Canada to choose public transit

Convenient access to transit services makes it easier for people to choose public transportation. With three in four people living in large urban centres, more are relying on transit options. Through its transit initiatives, the Government is supporting the purchase of more than 13,000 buses, helping grow the transit systems that Canadians depend on every day.

Did you know?

Investments in public transit are making it more accessible for Canadians: as of 2024, nearly 75% of the Canadian population lives within 500 metres of a public transit stop.

We're helping rural Canadian communities access transportation options

Canadian communities including rural, remote, Northern, and Indigenous communities often lack access to transit options. This leaves those without private vehicles or the ability to drive isolated from economic opportunity, essential services, and social interactions.

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is investing in projects that enhance transit options in these communities. This support fosters locally-driven transit solutions, benefiting rural communities. With initiatives like new transit agencies, on-demand services, publicly-owned ride shares, and volunteer community car-pooling, federal funding is helping people get to work, school, appointments, and social events.
