Greening transportation solutions
Did you know?
Across Canada, public transit is getting greener, with a 31% increase in electric buses and significant growth in bio-diesel (+64%) and hybrid buses (+15%) from 2020 to 2022.
A sustainable transportation system is a key component to achieving Canada's climate change target of net-zero emissions by 2050. Thanks to investments in expanding and maintaining public transit infrastructure, zero emission buses and active transportation systems, Canada can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution while encouraging people in Canada to choose sustainable transportation options.
Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is an important partner, working with municipalities, provinces, territories, and Indigenous communities to make these investments come to life.
We're supporting sustainable communities by providing Canadian communities with environmentally friendly transportation choices
In May 2024, 1 in 6 commuters in Canada used sustainable transportation to commute to work. As pandemic restrictions lifted and more people returned to hybrid workplaces, there was a noticeable increase in the number of commuters. Through its transit initiatives, the Government is supporting the purchase of more than 13,000 buses including over 8,700 zero emission buses. By investing in sustainable transit options, Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada aims to increase the number of people who regularly choose to use environmentally sustainable travel.
