Active transportation
Active transportation infrastructure makes it possible for people to get around their community without using a vehicle — whether that's biking on a multi-use path to get to work or walking or using a wheelchair on a sidewalk to get to school or a bus stop. Safe and protected active transportation infrastructure is key to making biking and walking a safe option for people of all ages and abilities. Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is an important partner, working alongside all levels of government to advance active transportation, a healthy, green, and affordable form of transportation.

We're supporting design and infrastructure projects that support safer active transportation networks
Many children live a short walk or bike ride from school but a lack of safe infrastructure prevents them from biking or walking to get to school. Similarly, many people in Canadian communities have indicated that they would use active transportation to get around if there was safe infrastructure built close to where they live. From better lighting along river paths to safe bike parking spots by transit stations, investments in safer active transportation networks makes travel by human-powered mobility possible for more people.
Active transportation infrastructure connects neighbourhoods and increases affordability
Safe, accessible and convenient active transportation networks contribute to long-term, sustainable, and inclusive economic growth. By making it possible for people to walk or bike to buy groceries or get to health care appointments, Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is ensuring more people can access both the health benefits and the financial savings from active transportation.
