Meeting growing demand at the Fredericton International Airport (YFC)

In 2019, the Fredericton International Airport welcomed nearly 430,000 travellers, more than double its capacity of 200,000 passengers per year. It became clear that the terminal was in need of an expansion. So, with funding secured, shovels hit the ground that same year and construction progressed quickly. Two years later, in 2021, the expansion and renovation project was complete.

“An airport serves as a region’s first, and last impression and that’s why investing in a modern, welcoming terminal matters,” says Johanne Gallant, President and CEO of the Fredericton International Airport Authority. “The terminal expansion and renovation ensure YFC is well positioned to welcome more travellers with an efficient and accessible travel experience for all.”

Improving passenger flow

The airport had been operating above capacity for over a decade before the governing authority secured funding for the $30 million project, including a $9 million federal government contribution and a $9 million contribution from the provincial government. The terminal building dated back to 1963, and the waiting and ticketing areas became too crowded. The expansion addressed the need for more space by increasing the terminal size by half. New passenger screening lines were added, a larger arrivals area was created, and a new inbound and outbound baggage conveyor system was installed.

An enhanced pre-boarding experience

The 2021 expansion and renovation project really brought the facility into the 21st century. Updated safety standards were met. New natural lighting, ticket counters, washrooms, and wall finishes were added. The check-in and security areas were redesigned with space in mind and the departures lounge was modernized to help passengers prepare for a more comfortable flight. New food options were offered. Charging stations and USB inputs were installed at every seat, and enhanced free Wi-Fi was deployed so business travellers can now stay connected and the general public can use their cellphones, tablets, and laptops. Families travelling with young children were also catered to with the addition of a nursing room, and a spacious new family room.

“YFC’s terminal expansion was a critical investment in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Atlantic Canada’s economic future,” says Morgan Peters, CEO of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce. “A modern, accessible airport strengthens our ability to attract talent, support business growth, and connect New Brunswick’s Capital Region to national and global opportunities.”

Thanks to the investment of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada in this project, the airport has become a proud ambassador of the capital of New Brunswick.

• Projects supported through this fund allowed people and goods to move more freely, increased the potential for innovation and economic development, helped to improve the environment and supported stronger, safer communities.
• The PTIC-NRP started in 2014-2015. No additional project proposals are being accepted under this program.
