A Modern Amphitheatre in Mont-Joli
Funding provided through the Small Communities Fund (inactive)
The construction of the new Desjardins amphitheater in Mont-Joli was a major investment in the modernization of the local sports infrastructure. This project has transformed the site into an up-to-date, accessible and functional venue, offering superior facilities for sporting and community events. Replacing the old stadium, the new amphitheatre makes it possible to better meet the needs of athletes, spectators and local communities.
Did you know?
The amphitheatre bears the Desjardins name, in recognition of the organization’s significant financial contribution and enduring commitment to the development of the La Mitis region.
This brand-new‑arena has been designed to offer modern facilities tailored to the needs of both athletes and members of the public. Among its main features is a regulation 85‑foot by 200-foot ice rink, complete with bleachers that can seat around 800 spectators, guaranteeing an immersive experience for ice sports fans.
The arena also includes a main entrance with a reception hall and ticket office, as well as administrative areas to facilitate the management of sports activities. For the comfort of players and staff, seven changing rooms have been equipped (including one reserved for female clients), as well as a locker room for the local high school hockey teams. A waiting area and three multi-purpose rooms enhance the services on offer, while mechanical and electrical rooms keep the facilities running smoothly.
Accessibility and the well-being of spectators were also considered, with the creation of a dedicated area for them, along with toilets and a kitchenette. In addition, the site design includes the construction of a parking lot with around 200 spaces, facilitating access for all visitors.
This project is important for Canadians, as it enables us to maintain and develop modern sports infrastructure that is accessible to all. The new Desjardins amphitheater is a gathering place for families, friends and members of the local communities. By building this new space, we're giving everyone the opportunity to have unforgettable experiences and come together through a shared love of sport. What's more, this project creates jobs and stimulates the local economy, while strengthening community life. This infrastructure ensures a sustainable future for the new building and benefits not only the athletes but also the community, by providing an innovative space open to all.
Quick facts
- Initially, the project was aimed at modernizing Mont-Joli's Centenaire stadium. Instead, the city built a brand-new building called the Amphithéâtre Desjardins.
- The new 3,570-square-metre steel building features a mezzanine with a food court that can accommodate around 100 guests.
- The university-style amphitheatre, with bleachers on one side only, seats around 800 people. The space was designed to accommodate cultural events, with a capacity of up to 2,000 people.
- The amphitheatre is equipped with a standard ice surface measuring 26 metres by 61 metres (85 feet by 200 feet), seven dressing rooms and a locker room for the equipment used by players from École du Mistral, which competes in the Ligue de hockey préparatoire scolaire (LHPS) [preparatory school hockey league].
- The building is designed to be highly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Illuminated with LED lights, it is equipped with an R-513A refrigeration system, which uses a low global warming potential refrigerant. The building envelope is also designed to eliminate thermal bridges, reducing heating costs by approximately 15%. Energy efficiency is also optimized by the reflective ceiling, which reduces lighting requirements, and the galvanized roof with its high solar reflectance index (SRI).
- This facility will enable the town to develop its sports and cultural offerings, which will benefit the entire La Mitis community (the RCM of La Mitis comprises 16 municipalities).
