The Halifax Common has long been a central gathering place for residents. As part of the Halifax Common Master Plan, a new vision emerged to create a modern and welcoming aquatic facility that reflects the spirit of this cherished space.
The new pool features a sloped, beach-style entry and a barrier-free lift to ensure easy access for everyone. The deeper end offers swimming lanes and aquatic climbing walls, providing a variety of options for recreation and fitness. These additions help residents stay active, build confidence in the water, and enjoy experiences that strengthen their sense of belonging.
Did you know?
Revitalized in 2023, the Halifax Common Aquatics Facility upholds a public swimming legacy dating back to 1938, within Canada's oldest urban park, established in 1749.
Surrounding the pool is a vibrant water plaza featuring interactive sprays with lighting and sequencing that provide an engaging play experience for visitors of all ages. The area includes seating shaded by trees, making it a comfortable space to soak in the outdoors.
A nearby building adds to the facility's community focus. It includes a multi-purpose room with a kitchenette, universal change rooms, and public washrooms. A partially covered outdoor shelter offers entertainment opportunities to support gatherings, lessons, and events. From summer camp programming to community celebrations, this space adapts to local needs.
Sustainability and energy efficiency were key parts of the design. The entire building is net-zero, with solar panels on the roof and natural ventilation throughout the summer. These elements reduce environmental impact and ensure the facility remains a reliable community anchor for decades to come.
The project was constructed in partnership with Marco Group and received funding from the Halifax Regional Municipality and the Government of Canada through the Canada Community-Building Fund to support the construction of the new outdoor pool and surrounding amenities.
Outdoor recreational spaces like this strengthen community health, create inclusive opportunities, and provide places where residents can connect and thrive together. With accessible features, playful amenities, and sustainable design, the Halifax Common Aquatics Facility will enhance the quality of life for residents and serve the community for many years to come.
