The year was 1967 when the Stanley A. Milner Library first opened its doors in downtown Edmonton. At the time, it was a symbol of knowledge and community as a hub serving locals with countless stories and resources within its walls. Decades passed, and while the library remained a cherished landmark, the city around it grew, and the needs of its community evolved. By 2018, the library’s aging structure was in desperate need of rejuvenation, prompting a bold vision for its future.
Did you know?
The Milner Library receives over 1.2 million visits each year!
For two years, from 2018-2020, the library underwent a remarkable renovation, transforming it into a modern, accessible hub for the community. The redesign created brighter, more spacious, areas for reading, studying, and hosting events. Not only does it feature improved accessibility features, such as wider aisles and accessible entrances, it also includes structural and seismic upgrades, ensuring the library is inclusive - and safe - for all visitors.
But the transformation went far beyond aesthetics and safety: the library introduced new resources and technology such as digital tools, interactive learning stations, and a "maker space" equipped with 3D printers and laser cutters. These additions provide valuable opportunities for students, artists, and future entrepreneurs to explore creativity and innovation while bringing their ideas to life.
The library, as a result, also expanded its programs to better serve the community by offering free workshops, cultural events, and job-search resources. These initiatives help people develop new skills, connect with others, and find support.
Among its many new features, one unique feature stood out: its celebrity book selection. This curated collection highlights books chosen by local figures including authors, artists, and leaders. This special addition is a simple yet profound way to encourage reading and celebrate Edmonton’s creative spirit.
Overall, the Stanley A. Milner Library’s renovation has enhanced its role as a center not only for learning, but one that also encourages creativity and community engagement - making it a modern, inclusive space that will continue to play a vital role in Edmonton's cultural and educational life.
