Outdoor view of modern sports facility

Funding provided through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

Imagine a place at the heart of the community – a vibrant hub where families gather, athletes chase dreams, and neighbours build lasting connections. This is the Simmons Sports Centre, a state-of-the-art facility in Charlottetown designed to inspire and unite residents through active living. This new space represents the collaborative commitment of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and Canada to wellness, community spirit, and sustainable living.

Constructed between January 2022 and December 2024, the Simmons Sports Centre is not only modern but environmentally forward-thinking. Designed to be net-zero energy ready, the facility is built with high energy efficiency standards and is equipped for the future integration of renewable energy systems – allowing it to eventually generate as much energy as it consumes. Its range of amenities caters equally to competitive athletes and recreational users, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all who pass through its doors.

At its core is a full-sized NHL ice rink, a place for dreams to flourish – from young skaters experiencing their first moments on the ice to seasoned athletes competing before enthusiastic crowds of 590 spectators. With six thoughtfully designed dressing rooms, the sports centre offers seamless transitions and a supportive atmosphere for athletes, teams, and families.

Beyond the ice, the Centre promotes year-round wellness and connection. An inviting indoor walking track provides a comfortable space for residents to remain active in every season, while a sparkling 25-metre outdoor swimming pool, complete with accessible ramps and inclusive change rooms, invites the entire community to participate in recreation and competitive swimming. Versatile community rooms, comfortable viewing areas, and accessible facilities further underscore the Centre's role as a dynamic gathering place where health, engagement, and inspiration thrive.

A collaborative investment in health and well-being

The completion of the Simmons Sports Centre marks a significant investment in the health and well-being of Charlottetown residents, made possible through collaborative funding from multiple levels of government. The federal government contributed $9.7 million to this $37 million project with the remaining funds provided by both provincial and municipal governments.

More than just an investment in physical infrastructure, the Simmons Sports Centre is an investment in community, connection, and quality of life. It is a place where young athletes will step onto the ice for the first time, where families will create lasting memories, and where community members of every age and ability can gather, stay active, and grow together. The Centre embodies the collaborative commitment to fostering a vibrant, healthy community for generations to come, ensuring that residents and visitors of Charlottetown have an inspiring and welcoming space to prioritize their physical and emotional well-being.
