Leveraging investments to improve housing supply and affordability
Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. Across the country, families and individuals are struggling to find an affordable place to live. Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada is committed to delivering on the programs and initiatives identified in Canada's Housing Plan and Budget 2024, as well as collaborating with partners to implement the Government of Canada's National Housing Strategy, and ensuring that infrastructure dollars contribute to improved housing supply and affordability across Canada.
We are leveraging infrastructure investments to support Canada's housing needs
Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada's investments in transit, water and waste water, climate resilience, as well as community, culture and recreation all support complete, inclusive, accessible, and affordable communities. Through our various programs and funds, we are strengthening the link between our infrastructure and housing needs and are prioritizing housing outcomes by linking infrastructure with housing supply, including affordable and rental housing.
Our infrastructure investments are:
- Protecting homes from extreme weather events by contributing to updates to building and infrastructure codes to support climate resilient infrastructure in Canadian communities.
- Providing urban and rural Canadian communities access to essential services or a way to get to work by supporting and expanding public transit systems.
- Ensuring households have easy access to parks, childcare facilities, arenas, libraries, and other amenities and services by investing in community spaces.
We are committed to supporting and implementing measures for an improved housing sector in Canada
In April 2024, the Government of Canada launched an ambitious plan to solve the housing crisis, and make housing more affordable for Canadians, by:
- Building more homes by bringing down construction costs, getting cities to allow more homes to be built faster, transforming how we build them, and growing the workforce to get the job done.
- Making it easier to rent or own a home and ensuring every renter or homeowner can retain their home.
- Helping Canadians who can't afford a home by working to end chronic homelessness in Canada, and building more affordable housing for students and seniors.
This Plan builds on federal housing objectives in the National Housing Strategy. Launched in 2017, the Strategy includes a range of complementary programs and initiatives that address diverse housing needs of Canadians.
The federal government is committed to doing its part and working together with its partners – provinces and territories, cities and towns, Indigenous Peoples as well as the private, non-profit, and community housing sectors – to increase housing supply and affordability, address housing challenges, and build stronger communities.
