Innisfil's journey toward building a stronger, more inclusive community
Innisfil Ontario has taken a significant step toward addressing housing challenges by completing a Housing Needs Assessment (HNA) using the federal template – a detailed data-driven report that describes the current and future housing needs of a municipality.
The HNA has provided valuable insights into the community's housing challenges and opportunities. It highlights key needs, particularly among seniors, Indigenous residents, single-parent households, and individuals fleeing domestic violence.
With this information, Innisfil is making informed, realistic decisions to guide future growth and shape policies that respond directly to the community's needs.
Did you know?
Communities with a population over 30,000 must complete an HNA to access federal housing and infrastructure funding, including the Canada Community-Building Fund, Canada Public Transit Fund, and the Housing Accelerator Fund – a vital step in building stronger, more inclusive communities.
Innisfil is also taking practical steps such as updating its land use planning documents, and expanding the variety of housing options available to residents. The Town recognizes the importance of collaboration and is working closely with Simcoe County, private developers, non-profits, and other local partners to develop effective housing solutions that work.
Looking ahead, Innisfil's HNA is paving the way for more ambitious changes, including reviewing zoning bylaws, exploring financial incentives, and streamlining development approvals to encourage more affordable housing.
“The Town of Innisfil is a growing community and a desirable place for people to live, with access to Lake Simcoe, many parks, and other key amenities such as schools, arenas, and shopping,” says Andria Leigh, director, Planning and Growth.
Innisfil continues to work with all orders of government, and is able to help provide the most suitable housing options to meet the needs of its residents, with support from programs such as the Canada Community-Building Fund.
Through collaboration and shared responsibility, Innisfil is building a community where residents feel secure, supported, and able to thrive. The Government of Canada remains committed to supporting municipalities like Innisfil as they take action on housing and build a more inclusive future for all Canadians.
